Have questions about writing? Check these FAQs for information.

How do I start?

I get asked this question a lot. The answer seems obvious, but sometimes it's not. Write! A writer writes. You might be surprised how many people say they're going to write a book but never put one word on paper. If you want to write, get started. You don't have to know where it's going, if you're going to get published, or if it will be good enough...You can figure all that out later.

I have started writing--or I've already written something. Where can get more information?

Check the reference links on the left. Look for local writer groups by doing a Google search or checking Sally Stuart's Christian Writers Market Guide.

Find a writers conference. They are listed in Sally's guide and on lots of web sites. They are essential, especially when you are just starting out. They do require an investment in fees and travel costs, but you will not regret going. If you have lots of questions chances are you'll find the answers at a writers conference.

I'm Working on a Book Proposal. Any tips?

Don't rush this part. Do your homework. A book proposal is the vehicle that sells your book. There are several books that explain how to write a book proposal. They are definitely worth the money.

Book Proposals That Sell, 21 Secrets to Speed Your Success by W. Terry Whalin

Can I contact your agent?

Yes. It's a free country. But if you are really asking if you can tell him I sent you, NO! That would indicate a personal recommendation. I just don't have the time to read and mentor all the people who ask me to. If I did that I wouldn't have time for my own writing. I'm sure you understand. And I can't recommend someone without reading their work.

Can you look at my work (book proposal, outline, chapters, the first 400 pages of my manuscript?

Again, I'm sorry but no. Please don't embarrass us both by asking. On rare occassions I do this, but only when I initate it. I want to help aspiring writers, but again I have to protect my own writing time. You can get the help you are looking for in writers groups and critique groups. These kinds of groups have been tremendously helpful to me in the past. You can also get your work looked at and receive advice at many writers conferences.

I'm looking for a ghostwriter. Can you help me write my book? I'll share the royalites with you. (Or I have a great idea for a book. I'm not a writer. You should write this book.)

Once again, no. I can only take on projects that I feel passionate about, and I have enough ideas of my own. I have never done ghostwriting.

Writers make a lot of money, right?

Some do. Most don't. Don't quit your day job!
